Abstract
Songs or music are said to have the ability to influence a person's condition and mental health. It can serve as a medium for self-healing, especially among many people who are still unable to address their issues with professional help. The message of 'self-acceptance' in songs is considered to effectively improve mental health due to the relationship between 'self-acceptance' and psychological condition. This study selected the song "Grow Up" by Stray Kids, a South Korean group, as a song with a 'self-acceptance' message. The research aims to examine the audience's process of receiving the 'self-acceptance' message in the song and the relevance of this message as a medium for self-healing. The method used is data analysis of interview transcripts conducted with seven informants using two coding cycles, referring to audience reception theory. The results show that four informants are in a dominant hegemonic position, while the other three are in a negotiated position. These findings are influenced by contextual factors found in the study, including the informants' background, personal experiences, awareness and mental health, and music preferences, which impact their interpretation of the message. The study also shows that the 'self-acceptance' message in the song is related to self-healing, where 'self-acceptance' helps individuals express their feelings, providing calmness and motivation. The findings indicate that songs with a 'self-acceptance' message can be an option for self-healing if someone cannot visit available mental health facilities. This is because the message can enhance a sense of acceptance that strengthens the individual.
