Abstract
Stroke is a cerebrovascular disease characterized by impaired blood supply to the brain and stands as a leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide. Constipation emerges as a common complication in stroke patients, afflicting about 60% of cases. Abdominal Massage (AM) stands out as a recommended nursing intervention for preventing and managing constipation in stroke patients. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of AM in treating and preventing constipation in stroke patients. Employing a case study methodology with a nursing care approach, two stroke patients admitted to a hospital in Jakarta were selected as units of analysis. AM, encompassing techniques like effleurage (circular stroking motions following the direction of the colon), petrissage (kneading and friction), and abdominal vibration, was administered twice daily for three days, each session lasting 15 minutes. The results on the third day revealed improved bowel sounds in both patients, reduced abdominal distension, and normalized elimination in one patient. These findings underscore the efficacy of AM as a nursing intervention for managing and preventing constipation in stroke patients.
