Abstract

This study aims to know and analyze audience reception of toxic masculinity in the film Monster (2023) using Stuart Hall's Audience Reception Theory. This study seeks to raise public awareness of the issue of toxic masculinity in the mass media and explore the social impact of the messages conveyed by the film as a product of popular culture. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach and a constructivist paradigm. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews with six informants from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds, using purposive sampling techniques, and supported by documentation and literature review. Data analysis refers to previous theory that divides audience reception positions into three categories: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional positions. Data validity is ensured through source triangulation and member checking. The results show that among the six informants, three are in the dominant-hegemonic position and the remaining three are in the negotiated position. These differences of interpretation were caused by various factors, such as the informants backgrounds, their knowledge, their experiences, their observations, and local culture or their social environments.
