Abstract
This study analyzes how audiences decode the representation of the self-dignity values of domestic scandal victims in the film "Norma: Antara Mertua dan Menantu" amidst the clash of sociological values between urban and suburban societies. Employing a qualitative approach integrated with Stuart Hall’s Encoding-Decoding reception analysis and the four elements of self-dignity, the study reveals reception homogeneity within the dominant-hegemony position regarding the mapping of moral roles. All informants unanimously accepted Norma and Abah as victims, while positioning Irfan and Ambu as perpetrators. However, the findings indicate variations in reception positions regarding the sources, social support, and integrity of Norma’s dignity post-scandal, which were influenced by the audience's sociological backgrounds. Informants from outside Jakarta shifted to a negotiated position by associating the victim's dignity with the stigma of family disgrace. Conversely, Jakarta informants maintained a dominant position, arguing that Norma's dignity remained intact as the scandal was beyond her personal control. This study concludes that while the film's discursive narrative was effectively conveyed, the degree of the victim's intact dignity remains intersubjectively negotiated by the audience's sociological context. Keywords: Reception Analysis, Self-Dignity, Film Norma: Antara Mertua dan Menantu.
