Abstract

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, resulting in ineffective breathing patterns. According to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the prevalence of asthma in Indonesia reaches 4.5%, or more than 12 million people, with a diagnosis rate of 1.6%. Asthma patients require comprehensive nursing care. This study aims to apply the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation, to asthma patients with ineffective breathing patterns at Pasar Minggu Regional General Hospital in Jakarta. The method used was a qualitative case study through observation, physical examination, and medical record analysis. The assessment results showed that the patient had difficulty breathing, wheezing, increased respiratory rate, and the use of accessory muscles for breathing, so the nursing diagnosis was ineffective breathing pattern. Implementation of care was carried out for 3 days which included monitoring respiratory conditions, placement in a semi-Fowler position, providing education, and applying the Buteyko breathing technique. The evaluation results showed improvement in the patient's condition, as indicated by a respiratory rate of 22x/minute, a more regular breathing pattern, no wheezing, an SpO₂ level of 98%, and nursing problems had been resolved. Comprehensive nursing care improves the breathing patterns of asthma patients and increases independence in care. It is expected that understanding and ability to apply the Buteyko breathing technique taught independently are expected.
