Abstract

Background: The elderly are a group vulnerable to health issues, including depression, which is often undetected. In Indonesia, the prevalence of depression in the elderly is quite high, with data from the Ministry of Health in 2022 showing a rate of 15.8%. Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Budi Mulia 1 is one of the places that cares for elderly individuals at risk of depression. Objective: To analyze the level of depression in the elderly at this social facility and the factors influencing it. Methodology: Using a descriptive quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach, this study involved 82 elderly participants selected through total sampling. Data was collected using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS. Results: The study found that 45.1% of respondents experienced mild depression, 26.8% moderate depression, and 2.4% severe depression. Factors such as age, gender, education, former occupation, and marital status significantly influenced the prevalence of depression. Conclusion: Elderly individuals aged 60–74, women, those with low education, unemployed, and those who are unmarried or have lost a partner are more vulnerable to experiencing mild depression. This study suggests physical activity-based interventions to improve the mental health and quality of life of the elderly in social facilities, through increased social interaction, reduction of depressive symptoms, and psychological well-being support.
