Abstract

Women are often associated with various forms of gender injustice. Gender inequality still exists in several layers of society, with one form of discrimination against women being the subordination of women's roles to those of men and the notion that women do not have the right to participate in public activities. To address the issue of gender stereotypes, awareness of the importance of gender equality must be increased. This study aims to analyze the representation of gender equality in the Korean drama "Queen of Tears" using John Fiske's semiotic analysis. The method used is John Fiske's semiotic analysis, which divides signs into three levels: Reality, Representation, and Ideology. The results show that the Korean drama "Queen of Tears" successfully represents gender equality through the depiction of its characters' lives, who have equal access to education and employment, active participation in decision-making, and balanced control or authority between male and female characters. This study concludes that the drama "Queen of Tears" conveys the significance of gender equality by portraying empowered and equal women in various aspects of life.
