Abstract

This study aims to analyze how double discrimination of black women is depicted in the film Hidden Figures (2017). Black women receive a form of double discrimination based on two factors inherent in them, namely racial and gender factors. Double discrimination received by black women is still an unresolved issue to this day. The research method used is qualitative descriptive using primary and secondary data sources. The data collection technique in this study uses the code of television John Fiske and is analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The results of data collection indicate double discrimination against black women in the workplace which is seen in three levels, namely: reality, representation and ideology. The ideologies contained in this film are racism, sexism and feminism. The results of the analysis of the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth show that there is discriminatory treatment of black women in the workplace based on racial and gender factors. The forms of double discrimination found include the separation of facilities such as toilets and dining rooms or canteens which burden and isolate black women. Obstacles in career development where black women have difficulty developing their careers because they are hindered by interrelated racial and gender issues. Black women also had to accept lower wages than white men and white women.
