Abstract

This research aims to understand the communication experiences in the social penetration process of students from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at UPN “Veteran” Jakarta during the online Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (PKKMB FISIP) activities using Alfred Schutz's phenomenological study on social interaction. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method using primary and secondary data sources. Sampling is conducted through the snowball sampling technique. The researcher follows four stages of data analysis according to Miles & Huberman, which include data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing/verification through data triangulation. The final results of the research indicate that the social penetration stage of new students from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at UPN “Veteran” Jakarta during the PKKMB FISIP activities, whether conducted online or offline, only reached the Affective Exchange stage. Communication through various online platforms sometimes gives rise to various communication problems. Based on Schutz's theory, which seeks to uncover the meaning behind an individual's social actions, the actions of new students from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at UPN “Veteran” Jakarta during the PKKMB FISIP activities, whether conducted online or offline, aim to establish close relationships with the main motivation being the need for friends or relationships within the university environment.
