Abstract

Bad news (BBN) refers to communications that can significantly impact a patient's perspective on their future. The dynamic nature of the Emergency Department (ED) and the swift fluctuations in patients' health statuses render BBN a significant problem for nurses. Prior research indicated that nurses frequently experience apprehension while providing Bad News and often attempt to evade it. This research utilised a qualitative methodology with a phenomenological framework. Data gathering methods were executed via interviews. The experiences of nurses in conveying adverse news at the Emergency Department of RSUP Persahabatan were examined through interviews with seven informants who satisfied the inclusion criteria, specifically nurses engaged in patient care and possessing experience in providing unfavourable news. This study's thematic analysis identified four primary themes: nurses' self-efficacy in providing BBN, the role of nurses in BBN, problems encountered by nurses in BBN, and the influence of BBN on nurse-patient relationships. Keywords: experience, nurses, breaking bad news, emergency room
