Abstract

Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) defines the elderly as someone who is 60 years old and above. As they age, the ability to carry out daily activities independently often decreases. Independence is essential for maintaining quality of life, increasing productivity, and preventing overdependence.Therefore, it is important to maintain the ability and independence of the elderlyin daily life. Objective: To identify the level of independence in performing activities of daily living in the elderly at Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Budi Mulia 1. Method: This study uses a total sampling method on respondents who meets the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using the Barthel Index questionnaire with a sample of 82 respondents. Result: Overall, the level of independence in the independent category was 42 people (51,2%), light dependence was 12 people (14,6%), moderate dependence was 22 people (26,8%), and severe dependence was 6 people (7,3%). In this study, there were no respondents who were in the total dependence category. Conclusion: Based on the result of the study, it shows that 51,2% of the respondents from the total sample are in the independent category.
