Abstract

Inequality in access to education remains a significant issue faced by marginalized communities, including those living around the TPST Bantargebang area. Economic limitations and inadequate educational facilities prevent many children from scavenger families from accessing proper formal education. In this context, non-formal education initiatives led by volunteers serve as an important alternative to address these educational gaps. The documentary film The Dream Scratch presents a portrait of a volunteer teacher at Sanggar Anak Kita (SAKA) Bantargebang who balances personal responsibilities with social dedication as an educator. The film explores the volunteer’s motivations, challenges, and humanitarian values underlying their involvement in non-formal education, while also illustrating the impact of their presence on children with limited access to schooling. This film is created using a portrait documentary approach, combining expository and participatory modes with a free cinema method. The director plays a central role in shaping the creative vision, guiding the production process, and constructing a reflective and ethical narrative. The documentary is expected to foster empathy and raise public awareness of educational issues in marginalized areas.
