Abstract
The rapid development of social media has transformed TikTok into a digital discussion platform where people can express, shape, and debate opinions on various public issues, including environmental degradation. This study aims to describe the dynamics of public comments on Gerald Vincent’s TikTok content regarding the nickel mining issue in Raja Ampat. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using the netnographic method within a constructivist paradigm. The research data consisted of user comments on four TikTok videos, collected through digital observation, documentation, and literature review. Data were analyzed through the processes of data reduction, coding, categorization, thematic interpretation, and data visualization using NVivo software as an analytical support tool. The findings indicate that the dynamics of public comments changed in line with the development of information presented in each uploaded video. Initially, the comments were dominated by support for environmental conservation efforts and criticism of mining activities. As the issue evolved, the discussion shifted toward debates concerning government policies, the validity of information, and the involvement of political actors, resulting in the polarization of public opinion in the digital sphere. From the perspective of Agenda-Setting Theory, these dynamics are reflected in the dimensions of visibility, audience salience, and valence, demonstrating that changes in media focus also influenced public attention and responses. This study concludes that TikTok functions not only as a platform for disseminating information but also as a public discourse arena that shapes and reflects the evolution of public opinion on environmental issues.
