Abstract
Film functions as a medium of representation that constructs meanings about social realities, including sexual violence. One Indonesian film addressing this issue is 27 Steps of May, directed by Ravi Bharwani, focusing on the life of a sexual violence survivor living with long-term trauma. This study aims to analyze the representation of sexual violence survivors in 27 Steps of May using John Fiske's Codes of Television, examining three levels of analysis: reality, representation, and ideology. This research employs a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation of selected scenes representing the survivor's experiences and documentation. The findings reveal that the film represents survivors of sexual violence as individuals experiencing prolonged psychological trauma affecting their behavior, interpersonal relationships, communication, and recovery process. This representation is constructed through social codes, including facial expressions, gestures, actions, appearance, and setting, and reinforced by cinematic language through visual composition, lighting, camera shots, camera movements, color palette, and minimal use of dialogue and background music. The study also finds that the film continues to reproduce patriarchal ideology by portraying sexual violence as the victim's private burden while positioning male characters as central figures in the survivor's recovery process.
