Abstract

Historically, United States foreign policy has been dominated by a masculine realism paradigm; however, the discourse of Feminist Foreign Policy (FFP) has emerged as an alternative. Popular culture possesses the visual political power to simulate this narrative, simultaneously filling the void within official state discourse. This research aims to analyze how the visual politics of FFP is constructed in the series The Diplomat through the dynamics of decision-making, as well as the extent to which this representation reflects the reality of US foreign policy. The analysis is built upon The Politics of the Visual theoretical framework and the concept of Feminist Foreign Policy to examine the processes of production, representation, and consumption within the fictional text. Methodologically, this study employs a qualitative approach utilizing critical discourse analysis. The findings reveal that The Diplomat constructs FFP through the deconstruction of female characters and a prioritization of human security. This representation reflects the reality of US foreign policy, which remains entangled in bureaucratic ambiguity, projecting feminist diplomacy not as an instant solution, but rather as a persistent negotiation process filled with pragmatic compromises amidst a hegemonic realist system.
