Abstract

Press freedom, as a fundamental pillar of democracy, continues to face various forms of political intimidation that threaten journalistic work in Indonesia. One notable incident was the delivery of a pig's head to the Tempo newsroom on March 19, 2025, targeting journalist Francisca Christy Rosana. This study aims to analyze how Tempo constructed symbolic resistance in response to this act of political intimidation to safeguard press freedom and the democratic public sphere. This research employed a descriptive qualitative methodology with a case study approach. Primary data were collected through in-depth interviews with Francisca Christy Rosana, Prof. Dr. Caroline Paskarina, and Wisnu Prasetya Utomo, while secondary data consisted of Tempo's news reports and communication content. The data were analyzed using Robert N. Entman's framing model as the analytical technique and subsequently interpreted through James C. Scott's theory of symbolic resistance as the primary theoretical framework. The findings reveal that Tempo developed symbolic resistance by framing the intimidation as a threat to press freedom, reinforcing moral legitimacy through official narratives and satirical humor, pursuing legal action, strengthening solidarity among press organizations, and sustaining investigative journalism. These strategies represent Scott's four forms of symbolic resistance: breaching, discourse, gesture, and explicit resistance. The study concludes that Tempo functions as a political actor that employs symbolic resistance to defend press independence against political intimidation. Academically, the findings contribute to the development of Political Science scholarship on media–power relations and symbolic resistance, while practically providing a reference for studies on press freedom in Indonesia.
