Abstract
Indonesia is a tropical country with high intensity of solar radiation, therefore, the use of sunscreen preparations is necessary. Bay leaf extract (Syzygium polyanthum), which possesses high antioxidant properties, has potential to be developed as an active sunscreen ingredient, and its formulation into a Nanostructured Lipid Carrier (NLC) system represents an approach to overcome instability and potential skin irritation. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of bay leaf extract incorporated into a Nanostructured Lipid Carrier (NLC) gel as a sunscreen. The study was initiated by the preparation of NLC using the microemulsion method, followed by characterization of the NLC using a Particle Size Analyzer (PSA), formulation of gel preparation with various NLC concentrations, and final evaluation of the formulations. PSA analysis of the NLC showed a particle size of 420,06 nm, a zeta potential value of -0,833 mV, and a polydispersity index of 0. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value of the bay leaf extract NLC system was 80.7156, which is classified as very high protection. The incorporation of 20% and 30% NLC into the gel base provided high protection, with SPF values of 15.9398 and 20.9305, respectively. Therefore, gel formulations containing varying concentrations of NLC demonstrate potential for further development as sunscreen product.
