Abstract
Objective: The rising age of first marriage among females, particularly within Generation Z, represents a significant demographic shift linked to educational pursuit, career development, and age-related fecundity decline. While social media is widely assumed to shape youth perspectives on marriage, empirical evidence linking its use to the desire to delay marriage remains scarce. This study aims to analyze the association between social media use and the intention to delay first marriage among female medical students at UPN “Veteran” Jakarta. Methods: An associative quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach was employed in this study, involving a sample of 114 female students selected through probability sampling and simple random sampling techniques. Social media usage was measured using the Social Media Use Integration Scale, whereas the inclination to delay the age of first marriage was assessed via a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. Results: The results demonstrated that low and high social media use had the same proportion, with 57 respondents (50%) in each category. Most respondents had the intention to delay first marriage, with 78 respondents (68.4%). The Chi-square test indicated that social media use does not significantly correlate with the intention to delay age at first marriage (p=0.314). Exploratory analysis also indicated that exposure to marriage-related content was not significantly associated with the intention to delay age at first marriage (p=0.506). Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between social media use and the intention to delay first marriage among female medical students at UPN “Veteran” Jakarta in 2026. The intention to delay age at first marriage is highly complex and likely driven by various external factors beyond social media use.
