Abstract
Background: Medical education involves high academic and psychological demands, making medical students vulnerable to burnout. This condition may be influenced by various factors, including impostor phenomenon and academic stress. Impostor phenomenon causes individuals to doubt their abilities despite having objective academic achievements, while academic stress occurs when educational demands are perceived to exceed students’ ability to cope with them. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between impostor phenomenon and academic stress with burnout among medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta, class of 2022. Methods: This study was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 90 medical students from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta, class of 2022, selected using simple random sampling. The instruments used were the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale (CIPS), the Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents (ESSA), and the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Student Survey (MBI-SS). Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and the Spearman correlation test. Results: Most respondents had a high level of impostor phenomenon, consisting of 46 respondents (51.1%), a moderate level of academic stress, consisting of 42 respondents (46.7%), and a moderate level of burnout, consisting of 45 respondents (50.0%). The Spearman correlation test showed no significant relationship between impostor phenomenon and burnout (r = 0.205; p = 0.053). There was also no significant relationship between academic stress and burnout (r = 0.207; p = 0.051). Both relationships showed positive directions with weak correlation strengths. Conclusion: There was no significant relationship between impostor phenomenon and burnout or between academic stress and burnout among medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta, class of 2022. These findings indicate that burnout among medical students may be related to various other factors that were not analyzed in this study.
