Abstract
Pneumonia is an acute infectious disease that attacks the lower respiratory system, which is indicated by the appearance of coughing and difficulty in breathing. Pneumonia is caused by various pathogens such as viruses, bacteria or fungi and can be life-threatening. This study aims to describe how to provide nursing care to pneumonia patients who experience ineffective airway clearance through the application of effective coughing techniques. This study uses a case study approach to patients suffering from pneumonia. The process taken in this study includes steps that include assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing. Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations and collection of health documentation with a focus on interventions carried out through the application of effective coughing techniques. The results of the nursing assessment showed that the patient was unable to carry out effective coughing techniques, had difficulty in expelling sputum, additional breath sounds in the form of ronchi appear in the inferior lobes of both lungs, SpO2 levels were at 92%, and the patient's respiratory rate reached 24x/minute. After nursing interventions were carried out for 3x8 hours, there was an increase in the patient's ability to cough effectively in expelling sputum, sputum production decreased with a more liquid consistency, additional breath sounds of rhonchi decreased, SpO2 levels increased to 97% and respiratory frequency decreased to 20x/minute. In this study, the application of effective coughing techniques was proven to improve the patient's ability to cough effectively, improve sputum expulsion, reduce sputum production, improve sputum consistency, improve the quality of the patient's breath sounds, improve SpO2 levels, and regulate the patient's respiratory frequency to the normal range. It is recommended for nurses to be able to apply effective coughing techniques to patients who have problems in clearing the airway.
