Abstract
Elevated triglyceride levels in diabetes mellitus increase the risk of cardiovascular complications, which remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Blueberry ethanol extract (BBE), which is rich in flavonoids and tripterpenoid, has the potential to improve insulin, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory thereby reducing triglyceride levels. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between blood triglyceride levels and the administration of BBE in a diabetic rat model generated by a high-fat diet and alloxan. In this study, 30 male Sprague-Dawley rats (ranging in weight from 150 to 200 g) were randomly assigned to one of six groups: K1 (control group), K2 (alloxan + high-fat diet), K3 (high-fat diet + alloxan + gemfibrozil), or K4-K6 (high-fat diet + alloxan + BBE at doses of 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg body weight, respectively). The rats were observed after each experimental intervention. For 28 days, the rats were given a high-fat diet; for the last 14 days, they were given the therapies. After that, the rats were put to sleep with ketamine-xylazine, blood was drawn via intracardiac puncture, and triglyceride levels were determined with the GPO-PAP method. The Kruskal–Wallis test demonstrated a significant effect of blueberry ethanol extract on blood triglyceride levels (p = 0.011). Post hoc Mann–Whitney analysis showed no significant difference between the 125 mg/kg body weight blueberry ethanol extract group and the gemfibrozil group (p = 0.110), indicating that the 125 mg/kg body weight dose produced a triglyceride-lowering effect comparable to that of gemfibrozil.
