Abstract
This study examines Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy toward Slovakia in increasing tourist visits during the 2022–2024 period. The growing relationship between the two countries has provided Indonesia with an opportunity to introduce its culture and national identity to Slovak society. However, the COVID-19 pandemic led to a decline in the number of Slovak tourists and affected the implementation of various cultural activities that served as a means of promoting Indonesia in Slovakia. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the implementation of Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy toward Slovakia during the 2022–2024 period and its contribution to increasing Slovak public interest in Indonesia, which may ultimately encourage a rise in tourist visits from Slovakia to Indonesia. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through document analysis, official publications, and interviews. The analysis is based on the concept of soft power and the five elements of cultural diplomacy proposed by Richard T. Arndt. The findings indicate that Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy was carried out through cultural and educational exchanges, the dissemination of cultural information, the promotion of a positive image of Indonesia, the implementation of sustainable activities, and collaboration between state and non-state actors. These efforts contributed to increasing Slovak public interest in Indonesia, strengthening Indonesia’s positive image, and encouraging a greater intention to visit Indonesia.
