Abstract
The rate of malnutrition in ICU patients is around 40-50% due to insufficient nutritional intake, resulting in the need for nutrition via NGT tubes. Regular monitoring of gastric residual volume is an important aspect of caring for patients with NGT tubes because ICU patients are prone to delayed emptying. This condition causes an increase in gastric residual volume, which delays enteral nutrition administration, resulting in inadequate nutritional support. Abdominal massage is beneficial for addressing gastrointestinal problems, especially in patients with NGT tubes in the ICU. Evidence-Based Nursing (EBN) applied to patients Mr. S and Mr. N involved abdominal massage consisting of five massage movements: gliding, vibration, kneading, friction, and stroking, performed for 3 days with measurement of gastric residue before and after massage to assess its effectiveness. NGT position and residual volume were checked using a tip catheter, with residues exceeding 200 cc being aspirated and documented. Abdominal massage was performed for 15 minutes using olive oil, followed by enteral nutrition and a 3-hour break before the next massage. A significant decrease in average gastric residue occurred in both patients, marked by changes in the color and consistency of the residue, indicating increased nutrient absorption. The results of the study show that abdominal massage is effective in reducing gastric residue in patients with gastrointestinal intolerance. This intervention has important implications as a complementary therapy in the ICU for optimizing enteral nutrition in critically ill patients.
