Abstract

Background: Hospitalization in preschool children often triggers anxiety due to being in a new and unfamiliar situation, loss of self-control, and separation from parents. An atraumatic care approach is applied to minimize stress and trauma during treatment by providing a safe and pleasant environment for the child. One non-pharmacological method that can reduce anxiety is puzzle play therapy, as it can positively distract attention while also providing an opportunity for children to channel their emotions. Objective: To analyze nursing care for children using puzzle play therapy to reduce anxiety levels caused by hospitalization. Method: A case study was conducted on two patients, one managed patient and one patient whose summary was used, involving the application of puzzle play therapy. The intervention was carried out once a day for three days, with a duration of between 15 and 30 minutes. The instruments used were the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS) questionnaire and an SOP sheet. Results: Both patients experienced a decrease in anxiety scores. In the managed patient, the average anxiety score decreased from 31 to 24.67, while in the resume patient, it decreased from 32 to 27. Conclusion: The intervention results show that puzzle play therapy is able to reduce anxiety scores in preschool children by 5–6 points during hospitalization, making it a potential non-pharmacological approach in pediatric nursing.
