Abstract
Background: Newborns often experience pain during treatment, especially during invasive procedures. They must receive adequate care during routine medical procedures that have the potential to cause pain. Non-nutritive sucking (NNS) is one of many non-pharmacological pain management options that can be used for newborns. Objective: This innovative intervention analysis was conducted to provide an overview of nursing care analysis of the application of NNS in reducing pain in infant patients undergoing invasive procedures in the Perinatology ward. Methods:This study is a case report study, involving a sample of managed patients and resume patients aged 0-28 days, with an Apgar score of more than 7 in the first 5 minutes, good sucking reflexes, no respiratory distress, and infants who will undergo invasive procedures. The implementation was carried out by attaching a pacifier to the infant 2 minutes before the invasive procedure began until it was completed and only removed when the infant was asleep. The success of the intervention was assessed using the Neonatal Instrument Pain Scale (NIPS) assessment sheet, which was evaluated by the researchers themselves. Results: The results of the implementation showed a decrease in pain scale from a score of 4 to 0 at 90 seconds, while the control group showed higher pain, with a score of 7, reaching 0 at 120 seconds. The decrease in pain in patients given NNS decreased progressively in a shorter time compared to those not given NNS. Conclusion: The application of NNS intervention during invasive procedures was proven effective in reducing procedural pain in neonates.
