Abstract
Burnout is a psychological problem commonly experienced by nurses, particularly those working in intensive care units, due to high job demands and complex job characteristics. Job characteristics and workload have been assumed to influence the occurrence of burnout among nurses. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between job characteristics and workload and burnout among nurses in the intensive care unit of RSUD Tarakan Jakarta. A quantitative descriptive analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 47 staff nurses selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected from November to December using a job characteristics questionnaire, the NASA Task Load Index to measure workload, and the Maslach Trisni Burnout Inventory to assess burnout. Data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. The results indicated that workload was significantly associated with burnout (p < 0.001) with a moderate correlation strength (r = 0.506), whereas job characteristics including objective performance, feedback, correction, job design, and work schedule were not significantly related to burnout (p > 0.05). This study concludes that workload plays an important role in the occurrence of burnout among intensive care nurses; therefore, hospitals are expected to optimize workload management to reduce the risk of burnout.
