Abstract
Non-adherence to fluid management remains a major clinical problem among patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis and may lead to fluid overload and various related complications. One internal factor presumed to influence patient adherence is self-awareness. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-awareness and adherence to fluid management in CKD patients receiving hemodialysis. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was applied in this study. The participants consisted of 88 CKD patients undergoing routine hemodialysis. Data were collected using a self-awareness questionnaire and a fluid management adherence questionnaire, supported by Interdialytic Weight Gain (IDWG) data. Statistical analysis was performed using Spearman’s correlation test. The results revealed a statistically significant association between self-awareness and adherence to fluid management (p-value = 0.003; r = 0.316), indicating a positive relationship with moderate correlation strength. The mean IDWG value was 3.46%, suggesting that fluid intake control among some patients had not yet reached optimal levels. In conclusion, self-awareness is significantly associated with adherence to fluid management; however, it is not the sole determinant of patient compliance. Therefore, comprehensive and continuous nursing interventions are required to ensure that increased self-awareness is accompanied by sustained behavioral changes in fluid management adherence.
