Abstract
Peripheral diabetic neuropathy is one of the chronic complications of diabetes mellitus that often occurs and can reduce the quality of life of patients. Cardiovascular disease and glycemic control are thought to play a role in the occurrence of this complication. This study aims to analyze the relationship between cardiovascular disease and glycemic control with the occurrence of peripheral diabetic neuropathy in diabetes mellitus patients at Tarakan General Hospital, Jakarta. This study uses an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 96 diabetes mellitus patients who met the inclusion criteria. Data analysis was performed using Fisher's Exact test for cardiovascular disease variables and Chi-Square test for glycemic control variables. The results showed no statistically significant relationship between cardiovascular disease and the occurrence of peripheral diabetic neuropathy (p = 0.124). Conversely, there was a significant relationship between glycemic control and the incidence of peripheral diabetic neuropathy based on HbA1c (p < 0.001) and 2-hour postprandial blood glucose (GDPP) indicators, while no statistically significant relationship was found based on fasting blood glucose (GDP) indicators. Respondents with uncontrolled glycemic control had a higher proportion of peripheral diabetic neuropathy. The conclusion of this study indicates that glycemic control is significantly associated with the occurrence of peripheral diabetic neuropathy, while cardiovascular disease does not show a statistically significant association.
