Abstract
Adolescents are a population group that is vulnerable to anemia due to rapid growth accompanied by increased nutritional requirements, particularly iron. The risk of anemia is higher among adolescent girls as a result of blood loss during menstruation. In Indonesia, anemia among adolescents remains prevalent and may lead to a decline in quality of life. Previous studies have reported inconsistent findings, with some demonstrating a significant association between hemoglobin levels and quality of life, while others have found no significant relationship between anemia or nutritional status and the quality of life of adolescent girls. These discrepancies highlight the need for further research that specifically examines the relationship between anemia and quality of life among adolescent girls to determine whether a meaningful association exists. This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 111 adolescent girls diagnosed with anemia participated in the study and completed the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Data were analyzed to assess the association between anemia status and quality of life. The results showed a significant association between anemia status and the psychological domain of quality of life (p = 0.035), as well as overall quality of life (p = 0.048). In conclusion, anemia status is associated with the quality of life of adolescent girls, with increasing anemia severity corresponding to a greater decline in perceived quality of life.
