Abstract

Childfree intentions have increased in trend in alignment with the slowing of fertility rates and population aging in numerous Asian countries including Indonesia. Factors like knowledge of pregnancy, birth, and parenting, anxiety levels, and social media use is thought to affect childfree intentions in young women. This research is aimed at finding how all three factors can affect childfree intentions among female, enrolled Bachelor of Medicine students at the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta. Quantitative methods are used after prior data collection using the Knowledge of Pregnancy, Birth, and Parenting Questionnaire, T-Anxiety Scale, and Social Networking Time Use Scale (SONTUS). Data is analysed using Fisher’s exact test. Results show that 26,98% of respondents have childfree intentions. A majority of them have high knowledge (74,60%), moderate anxiety (60,32%), and very high social media use (57,14%). Statistically significant correlations was established of knowledge of pregnancy, birth, and parenting, along with anxiety levels, towards childfree intentions. However, no significant correlations were found of social media use towards childfree intentions. This research offers deeper analyses of factors that can influence childfree intentions in female medical students and can be utilised as basis for evidence-based reproductive policies.
