Abstract
This study examines the implementation of the Indonesia Spice Up the World (ISUTW) program as a form of Indonesia’s gastrodiplomacy in the United Kingdom during the 2021-2024 period. ISUTW is an initiative by the Indonesian government aimed at promoting Indonesian spices, cuisines, and restaurants on a global scale as part of efforts to enhance the nation’s image and strengthen the creative economy. This study focuses on Paul Rockower’s concept of gastrodiplomacy, namely the expansion of restaurants and the promotion of cuisine. These two aspects align with two of the four main pillars of the ISUTW program, namely the expansion of Indonesian restaurants abroad and the promotion of Indonesian cuisine. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive method, with data collected through library research and an interview. The result of the study indicates that the implementation of the ISUTW program and Indonesia’s gastrodiplomacy in the UK have made considerable progress through the establishment of Indonesian restaurants such as Waroeng Windsor, Toba Restaurant, and other culinary businesses, as well as culinary festivals organized by the Indonesian diaspora and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the UK. However, the program still faces several challenges, including the limited number of Indonesian restaurants, the scarcity of authentic Indonesian ingredients and spices, the dominance of other foreign cuisines, and the lack of optimal policy support from the Indonesian government. Indonesia’s gastrodiplomacy efforts and the ISUTW program still require a long-term process to gain greater recognition in the UK. Nevertheless, there remains a promising opportunity to strengthen Indonesia’s gastrodiplomacy in the UK, considering the market potential and the British public’s growing interest in and positive appreciation of the rich and diverse flavors of Indonesian cuisine.
