Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of TikTok usage on the level of political participation among first-time voters in the 2024 Presidential Election, with a focus on Karadenan Village as the research location. In today's digital age, social media has become one of the primary means of disseminating political information, with TikTok occupying a strategic position due to its high user base among Generation Z. This study uses Glenn H. Utter's theory of Political Participation in his book Youth And Political Participation, which explains that political participation has three prominent characteristics, namely voting, partisan affiliation, and protest activities. In addition, Katz, Blumler, and Gurevitch's (1974) Uses and Gratifications theory is used to see how TikTok influences the political participation of first-time voters. The research method used is quantitative with a survey approach. Data collection was conducted by distributing questionnaires to 86 first time voter respondents in Karadenan Village. The results of the study indicate that the use of the TikTok app has a positive and significant impact on the political participation of first-time voters, with a significance test result of 0.000 < 0.05 and a calculated t-value of 9.873 > the table t-value of 1.989. TikTok not only serves as an entertainment platform but also acts as an effective tool in promoting political participation among first-time voters. This study reinforces previous research indicating that social media, including TikTok, has a real influence on the political behavior of young people.
