Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to understand Generation Z's experience of the visual communication design on the "Kabinet Indonesia Maju" banknotes issued by Bank Indonesia in 2022. The research employed a qualitative method with Martin Heidegger’s phenomenological approach. The participants consisted of five Generation Z informants and one professional from PERURI selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and literature review, and analyzed using concepts such as Dasein, being-in-the-world, hermeneutic circle, and existential themes. The findings indicate that the latest banknote design generates a fresher, more modern, and communicative visual impression, but interpretations from Generation Z vary. Some informants perceived the design as successful in fostering national identity, while others felt it did not align with the aesthetic values of their daily visual culture. This study is expected to provide valuable insights for designers and policymakers in creating banknote designs that are more relevant to younger generations.
