Abstract

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a respiratory system disorder characterized by progressive and partially irreversible airflow obstruction. This condition is commonly caused by long-term exposure to harmful particles or gases, especially cigarette smoke. It involves chronic inflammation that leads to structural damage in the lungs, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Common symptoms experienced by COPD patients include shortness of breath, chronic cough, and sputum production. This study aims to investigate the physiotherapy management of Acute Exacerbation of COPD cases. Design: This research was conducted as a case study. The sample was a 59-year-old male patient medically diagnosed with Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Results: The study found a reduction in pain scale, improvement in thoracic expansion, and a decrease in dyspnea scale. Conclusion: After four physiotherapy evaluation sessions with interventions including Posture Correction, Muscle Release, Breathing Control, Pursed Lip Breathing, Huffing, and Chest Mobility exercises, the patient showed reduced pain, improved thoracic expansion, and decreased dyspnea.
