Abstract
The Abang None contest has a long-standing history in the province of DKI Jakarta. This event has become a cultural symbol for DKI Jakarta due to its historical value, the impact it has generated, and the interests it represents. There has been limited research discussing the role of the Abang None contest in the implementation of national defense (bela negara), and there is still a lack of national defense spirit among the youth. The aim of this study is to understand the experiences within the West Jakarta Abang None contest in the context of national defense implementation, and to identify the factors that reflect the practice of national defense through the Abang None contest in West Jakarta. The research uses Expectancy Theory, which explains that individuals are motivated to work hard if they believe that their efforts will result in good performance. The research approach uses qualitative methods that focus on understanding nuances, context, and experiences. The author interviewed two individuals: None Jakarta Barat 2022 (West Jakarta None 2022) and the Chairman of the West Jakarta Abang None Association 2025. These two youth perspectives, having gone through the Abang None contest process, provide a broad outlook. The research findings show that Abang None Jakarta Barat plays a role in the implementation of national defense, fulfilling young people's expectations by providing not only experience but also learning opportunities, networks, and an awareness of the importance of preserving and promoting local culture. The Abang None contest contributes positively to the community, and participants motivation to promote national values and local culture has increased. Suggestions and recommendations are also discussed in this study.
