Abstract

This study aims to analyze the comparison of credibility between mainstream media and social media from the perspectives of different generations: Generation X, Y, and Z. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research explores audience perceptions regarding the accuracy, speed, objectivity, and interactivity of messages delivered by both types of media. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six respondents from diverse backgrounds. The findings reveal that mainstream media is perceived as more credible by Generation X and some of Generation Y due to its rigorous editorial process, established reputation, and accuracy of information. Conversely, Generation Z and some of Generation Y prioritize social media for its speed and accessibility, although they remain aware of the risks of misinformation and bias. Generation X tends to rely more on mainstream media for sensitive news, while Generation Z validates information through interactions on social media. This study highlights the challenges of information credibility in the digital era and the importance of digital literacy in ensuring the accuracy of information. Social media platforms are advised to improve their accuracy, while mainstream media should accelerate news delivery to stay relevant to younger generations' needs. Keywords: credibility, mainstream media, social media, digital literacy, Generation X, Y, Z
