Abstract

Diabetes mellitus, known as diabetes or sugar disease, is a metabolic disease that causes increased glucose levels in the body (hyperglycemia) caused by failure of the insulin secretion system. Based on the 2018 Riskesdas survey, DKI Jakarta ranks first nationally for the number of diabetes mellitus cases. Obesity is one of the main causes of the increasing number of diabetes mellitus cases worldwide. Lifestyle factors including diet and lack of physical activity are other factors causing diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between obesity and central obesity with the incidence of diabetes mellitus in individuals aged 25-44 years in DKI Jakarta. This research method is observational analytic with a cross-sectional study design and uses secondary data from Riskesdas 2018. The research sample was 624 respondents with a total sampling technique. The data analysis used was Chi-square. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between general obesity (p = 0.020), central obesity (p = 0.002) and age (p = 0.003) with the incidence of diabetes mellitus. This research is expected to increase public awareness of the need to change lifestyles to be healthier by getting used to and controlling oneself in consuming risky foods so that obesity rates and non-communicable diseases can be controlled.
