Abstract

Elderly individuals who suffer from stroke experience changes in their activities, affecting their social participation in the community. Social participation is crucial for the well-being of the elderly as it can enhance their quality of life. This study employs a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach to describe the social participation experiences of elderly stroke survivors. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with nine elderly stroke survivors in the Limo Depok area. The findings revealed that elderly stroke survivors experience significant changes in their social participation continuity. Thematic analysis identified four main themes: experiencing changes in activities, encountering barriers, adapting to changes, and needing support systems. The social participation experiences of elderly stroke survivors highlight significant changes, with family and healthcare provider support being crucial for adaptation. Community programs and increased family awareness about social support are needed. Further research is required to explore factors affecting the social participation of elderly stroke survivors. This study can serve as a reference for healthcare services and provide insights for families and healthcare providers on the importance of social support for elderly stroke survivors in their social participation.
