Abstract

First-time stroke patients often experience depression within the first three months after the stroke. Positive family support is crucial for boosting the patient's self-confidence, which can aid in their recovery. This study aimed to examine the relationship between family support and the level of depression in first-time stroke patients over their first year. It is a quantitative study using a cross-sectional approach, involving 85 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the family support questionnaire by Riyadi and Ruhyana, along with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Descriptive test results indicated that respondents generally received good family support and had low levels of depression. The Spearman test revealed a moderate relationship between family support and depression levels. A correlation coefficient of -0.429 and a p-value of <0.001 (p<0.005) were found, indicating that as family support increases, depression levels tend to decrease. Future research should assess the severity of the stroke to identify additional factors that may influence family support and depression levels.
