Abstract

This research aims to explore communicative actions and the role of coffee shops (warkop) as public spaces in the Mampang community of South Jakarta, using the framework based on Jürgen Habermas' theory of the public sphere. The study employs a qualitative case study method to understand the experiences and perspectives of coffee shop visitors and owners. Through in-depth interviews with 5 informants, consisting of visitors and coffee shop owners, this research identifies how coffee shops facilitate the exchange of ideas and viewpoints among individuals, create an atmosphere that supports freedom of expression, and raise awareness of public issues. The findings indicate that coffee shops play a significant role as inclusive and open informal public spaces, where norms of mutual respect, openness, simplicity, and community cooperation are maintained and reinforced. Additionally, social interactions in coffee shops contribute to a shared understanding of community values and goals, as well as collaborative problemsolving in the surrounding area. Thus, coffee shops can serve as an important platform in the formation of an ideal public space in South Jakarta.
