Abstract

A ferry is a type of vessel designed for transporting passengers and vehicles across bodies of water. Due to their function, ferries often experience collisions with docks, which can endanger the hull of the vessel. Thus, the role of rubber fenders is crucial in maintaining the ship's integrity. This research aims to determine which type of fender is most effective in withstanding applied pressure. The fender types used in this study include cone fenders, square fenders, and D-type fenders. Each fender was analyzed under varying pressures (420.7 N, 600 N, 800 N) and angles (0°; 2.5°; 5°; and 7.5°). Simulations were conducted using the Finite Element Method (FEM) with Simscale software, resulting in the pressure values that the ship's hull could tolerate (MPa). The study's findings indicate that the size of the fender does not significantly impact the pressure endured by the hull. Additionally, the angle of fender installation also affects the pressure capacity that can be withstood. This research provides a deeper understanding of the role of rubber fenders in withstanding pressures that may affect the safety of the ship's hull.
