Abstract

The limitations that deaf friends have often make it difficult for them to interact like other individuals. They only rely on nonverbal communication such as sign language to convey messages. However, this is often a barrier to communication, considering that not all individuals understand the meaning of sign language. Therefore, it is important to understand how they replace verbal communication with nonverbal communication and build a good understanding between deaf friends and the people around them. This study aims to evaluate the use of nonverbal communication for deaf students at SLB Negeri 02 Jakarta. This research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data collection was done through observation, interviews, literature studies, and documentation. As well as data analysis techniques using the model of Miles and Huberman. The results showed that the use of nonverbal communication in SLBN 02 Jakarta has been well implemented. This shows the development from grade one to grade six of elementary school, which shows that children have been able to use nonverbal communication as an alternative in communicating. Deaf students in SLBN 02 Jakarta explore different types of nonverbal communication as symbols to communicate and interact daily. It is important for deaf students to ensure that they can still participate fully in social and educational activities. The various types of nonverbal communication available as alternatives allow students to adjust to their conditions and abilities.
