Abstract
This research is motivated by the phenomenon that shows that children have a long- distance relationship with their parents because they leave their residence to pursue education. It applies family system theory, viewing the family as a system with interaction patterns aimed at achieving common goals. This research uses a constructivist paradigm to understand how social actors create and maintain their social world. The methodology is qualitative, with an explanatory case study approach. This research was conducted on members of the Ikatan Mahasiswa Darah Batak (IMADAB) of University Pembangunan "Veteran" Jakarta who indeed migrated to pursue education. This study aims to determine family communication patterns and relationship balance in the families of overseas students. The results showed that the communication pattern formed is an equality pattern in which communication occurs equally, openly, no party dominates and both parties feel they have the freedom to express their opinions. Communication between children and parents occurs through Whatsapp social media with the use of videocall features to support real communication experiences. In addition, the relationship between parents and children can be said to be almost balanced by seeing that both parties try to adjust to each other to achieve a common goal.
