Abstract
Background: Pneumonia is infectious disease with symptoms of shortness breath. Pursed lips breathing help improve oxygen transport. Purpose: Identify the successful application pursed lips breathing in nursing care for pneumonia with airway problems. Methods: This case study is descriptive with single case study at RSUD Pasar Rebo, using purposive sampling technique with criteria that adult pneumonia patients in state of composmentis, and treated at least 3 days. Data collection carried by interview, observation, physical examination, and documentation study. The pursed lips breathing action was performed to assess oxygenation status and evaluated using watch and pulse oxymetry. Results: The patient had complaints of shortness breath accompanied by fever to chills and ronchi which were the results of rongten consolidated infiltrates and nodules in both lungs, so the first nursing diagnosis taken was ineffective airway clearance. The action chosen was pursed lips breathing with the results of changes in oxygen status that improved. The second diagnosis is hyperthermia with the action chosen is the administration of paracetamol with the result of temperature improved. Conclusion: There is effect between application pursed lips breathing actions that are considered effective on the oxygenation status (breathing frequency and oxygen saturation) of patients with pneumonia that improve.
