Abstract

Friendship is one of the interpersonal relationships embraced by many young adults. Nowadays, there is a new term in friendship relationships, namely low maintenance friendship. Issues that arise in friendships include physical distance and gaps in the relationship. These challenges can occur when there is a lack of supportive behavior to sustain the friendship. Therefore, this research aims to examine the communication behavior of low maintenance friendship practiced by college students as young adults in long-distance friendships through WhatsApp. This study uses a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach to find out more deeply a person's experience of a phenomenon. Researchers collected data by conducting in-depth interviews with 7 (seven) college students who follow the @collegemenfess X account. The data analysis techniques used in this study is five-stage open coding. The result of this study found that the communication behavior of low maintenance friendship practiced by college students as young adults can be understood through six aspects, such as low communication intensity, extensive and personal conversation topics, verbal and nonverbal responses to communication noise, habits in long-distance communication, engagement in friendship relationships, and the application of rules within the friendship.
