Abstract

The incidence of infections or what is currently known as HAIs obtained from health service settings such as hospitals, health centers and clinics is still high. The main action that can be taken is to wash your hands according to the procedure. The aim of this paper is to determine the effect of hand washing education on increasing knowledge and hand washing behavior among patient visitors in preventing infection in the ICU room at Pasar Minggu Hospital. This education is carried out before visitors visit the ICU, where this education lasts for 30 minutes and is divided into 3 sessions, namely a pre-test session, presentation of material using video and poster media, then a post-test. Evaluation of this intervention was carried out using a questionnaire which was measured before and after the intervention was given. In the post-test, hand washing observations were also carried out using an observation sheet adapted from the hand washing SOP that had been created. The results obtained after the intervention were an increase in knowledge to 100% from previously 54%. Based on the analysis of the paired sample t-test to see the effectiveness of education using videos and posters, it was found that p=0.000, this indicates that education using videos and posters has proven to be effective in increasing knowledge and hand washing behavior among patient visitors before entering the ICU. This health education can have an impact on reducing the risk of transmitting infections to patients and family members.
