Abstract
Death is an element that is often presented as an attraction in horror films to create tension and fear. This research aims to analyze the representation of death in the horror film Pengabdi Satan 2: Communion by Joko Anwar. The analysis was carried out using Roland Barthes' semiotics. The analysis starts from denotational analysis and then goes deeper to the level of connotation and myth. The data collection technique was carried out by selecting scenes that depict death throughout the film. There are 27 scenes that are the focus of this research. The research results found that death in the film Pengabdi Satan 2 is represented as far beyond a biological event, namely as a transcendental event over which humans have no power. This myth is reproduced in the film Pengabdi Satan 2 by playing three functions of death, namely as a terror that creates threats and fear, as a debt that must be paid, and as a warning for deadly sins committed during life. Death as terror is represented by depicting death as an event that can come at any time and in any way, giving a mysterious, threatening impression. Death as a debt that must be repaid positions death as a consequence of a pact with Satan made by humans or a denial of God. Lastly, death as a warning illustrates humans' reward or karma due to the sins they commit. These three representations of death are rooted in the values and teachings of many religions in the world, which can be traced to the celestial and Ardhi religions, as well as the social understanding of death that has become entrenched.
