Abstract
This study aims to examine how group communication shapes and sustains cohesiveness in the collective life of The Rain members throughout nearly twenty-five years of making music together, as well as to interpret the meaning of cohesiveness as experienced by the band members. This study employed a qualitative approach using Martin Heidegger's hermeneutic phenomenology. The research participants consisted of all members of The Rain—Indra Prasta, Iwan Tanda, Aang Anggoro, and Ipul Bahri—as well as the band's manager, Roberto Pieter, and two fans, Rizky Ratna Sari and Nurul Mujiati, who served as supporting informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, documentation, and literature review, and were analyzed using open coding, axial coding, and selective coding techniques. The cohesiveness of The Rain members is formed through group communication characterized by openness, equality, and continuity within their collective life. Shared experiences, including living as migrants, struggling to build a music career, adapting to changes in the music industry, resolving conflicts through dialogue, and maintaining commitment to the band's original lineup, constitute the foundation for trust, collective identity, and emotional attachment among the members. Martin Heidegger's hermeneutic phenomenological perspective reveals that cohesiveness is interpreted as an experience of being-with that develops through collective life. The findings are consistent with Ernest Bormann's Symbolic Convergence Theory, which explains that shared experiences, stories, symbols, and meanings create collective identity and strengthen group cohesiveness. This study contributes to the development of group communication studies by positioning cohesiveness not merely as an outcome of communication processes but also as a lived experience continuously interpreted through communication and the collective life of the band members.
