Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of public sentiment on social media X toward the 17+8 social movement. The issues raised in this social movement involve sensitive aspects that trigger sharp opinion polarization, transforming the digital discussion space into an arena of public opinion contestation filled with sociopolitical criticism. This study employs a descriptive quantitative approach to map the distribution of public opinion polarity. The primary data in this study consists of 2,006 user comments collected through scraping techniques. The initial data labeling process was conducted automatically using a dictionary-based method with the InSet Lexicon, followed by an evaluation of its classification performance using the Multinomial Naive Bayes machine learning algorithm. The results show that audience opinions are massively dominated by negative sentiment, accounting for 1,189 comments (59.27%), followed by positive sentiment with 703 comments (35.04%), and neutral sentiment with 114 comments (5.68%). This high level of negative sentiment indicates strong public resistance, sharp criticism, and skepticism toward the movement. From the perspective of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) theory, this phenomenon is influenced by the characteristics of platform X, which provides visual anonymity and a lack of social cues, thereby triggering an individualism effect that makes netizens more aggressive in voicing sociopolitical criticism. The model performance evaluation yielded an excellent Final Accuracy Value for Model Validity at 80.10%. The use of Naive Bayes-based polarity classification is proven to be valid, reliable, and effective as a scientific instrument to map large-scale public opinion trends.
