Abstract
This study examines the dynamics of interpersonal communication between Coverage Coordinators (Korlip) and reporters in the tvOne editorial office in an effort to optimize news quality. The primary problem stems from a communication gap within the newsroom, where insufficiently detailed instructions, sudden agenda changes, and limited space for reporters' initiative hinder the creation of uniform news quality standards. This issue is analyzed using the Relational Dialectics Theory (RDT) framework to examine the tension between the need for reporter autonomy in the field and the demands for connection and editorial control from the Korlip. The research method used was a qualitative case study approach, with data collection techniques using participant observation and in-depth interviews with two key informant and five informants in the tvOne editorial office. The findings of this study highlight five main points. First, open communication is not optimal due to a reliance on text messages, which often results in incomplete instructions and leads to misunderstandings. Second, there is a misalignment where instructions during initial briefings are often inconsistent with the rapidly changing situation in the field, making the Korlip's directions feel less relevant to the facts on the ground. Third, news quality is highly dependent on the speed and clarity of feedback from the News Editor (Korlip), where without clear evaluation, reporters work without uniform quality standards. Fourth, there is a dialectical tension between reporters' desire for creative freedom (autonomy) and the strict editorial control of Korlip for the sake of editorial policy. Fifth, solid interpersonal relationships have proven to be key in expediting the data verification process and maintaining news accuracy amidst tight deadline pressures. In conclusion, optimizing news quality at tvOne is highly dependent on the ability of Korlip and reporters to manage interpersonal dynamics through two-way and integrative communication patterns.
